Traveling Tuesdays is heading to a city that starts with the letter Zed.  We are going to Zurich, Switzerland.

The city of Zurich is a global center for banking and finance.

It is located at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland.

Zurich was founded by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum.

Die Altstadt (German for “the old town“), located on either side of the Limmat River reflect the pre-medieval history of the city.  This area was the entire city before 1893.  Between 1893 and 1934 the now districts 2 to 12 were incorporated into the municipality and Zurich today is the largest city in Switzerland. Promenades along the waterfront follow the Limmat River toward the 17th-century town hall called Rathaus.

I have been to Zurich on at least two occasions.

The first time was in the 1990’s.  I traveled with my sister Ruth while she was
posted abroad at the Canadian Embassy.

We used our Youth Hostel Membership and booked accommodation at the Zurich Backpackers Hostel.

I remember the Main Train Station and we took a train to go to Bern to visit a friend who worked at the Canadian Embassy in Bern.

More than 20 years later, I had the opportunity to visit Zurich again.  This time I was participating in the European Handbell Festival and our final concert was held at the City Church of St. Jakob in Zurich.

We had an afternoon rehearsal and then our final concert in this beautiful church.  The student chimers of state college Enge were guest performers at our final concert in Zurich.

The following day we enjoyed a guided walking tour of the Old Town.

We saw Grossmünster, where Ulrich Zwingli established the Reformation in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

Another kirche we saw was the Fraumünster, which is famous for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.

We climbed the Uetliberg Mountain for a panoramic view of Zurich’s skyline. Up here, I recorded a video showing the view.

We finished our visit to Zurich by enjoying a relaxing boat ride on Lake Zurich.

Zurich is definitely a beautiful city to visit.  I have many pleasant memories of my trips to Zurich.

This completes Round 3 of my Traveling Tuesdays stories.  Be sure to return next time as we begin a new Round of Stories highlighting places I have visited all over the world.
