The Value of Having a Mentor for Your Home Business

The Value of Having a Mentor for Your Home Business – Maury and Louise Dawson

If you are fortunate enough to have found a mentor in any area of your life, then it is crucial that you recognize the value of that and that you cherish the relationship you have formed. This is especially true in business, where a mentor can help you to thrive and succeed far beyond what you would otherwise be capable of alone.

If you don’t have a mentor? Then you should strongly consider making an effort to find one. In this post, you’ll learn just why a mentor is so important and valuable and how you can go about finding one and working with them.

Ways That a Mentor Can Help You to Succeed in Your Business

Let’s say that you’re interested in becoming a blogger. Being a blogger has surely got to be one of the most cushy jobs of all time. Get this right and you will get paid to write about topics that you find fascinating. You’ll need to write a post a day maximum and you’ll be able to take your time doing it.

That means your days can be spent sitting in cafes watching the world go by while you sip tea and reflect on a topic that’s important to you. It means receiving fan mail from people who love what you’re writing about. It means getting sent free products to review…

In short, it’s pretty ideal!

But with a job this ideal, it’s of course true that you’re not going to be the only person gunning for it. This popularity means that it is incredibly hard to succeed as a blogger, if only because there are so many other blogs and it’s so hard to stand out.

This is why the vast majority of new bloggers will fail. And it’s why the eventually successful ones will spend years spinning their wheels before they finally find the success they’re looking for.

This is where a mentor can be invaluable. A mentor is someone who has previously been successful in becoming a blogger and thus they can tell you exactly where you need to be directing your time in order to be successful. For most of us, that means that you might learn the secrets to getting links on other blogs successfully. You might better be able to choose the right niche to begin with, or to design the right branding and logo in order to attract people to your site.

You might be able to avoid serious mistakes that could otherwise kill your chances of success – such as investing in paid links, or keyword stuffing.

The point is, that by knowing the keys to success, you can get there a lot faster and avoid the pitfalls along the way.

This is just one example. The same goes for any other kind of home business – a direct sales business for instance or even manufacturing.

More Benefits of a Mentor

Mentors don’t just give you a blueprint for success though, they can also offer value in other ways. For example, a mentor can help you by giving you motivation and inspiration to carry on. They can advise you on the best ways to keep your chin up when you’re feeling stressed and they can tell you about their failures when you’re feeling the heat.

A mentor will also be someone you have to answer to. They can keep you on track and ensure that you aren’t skimping on your duties.

Then there’s the relationship that you have with a mentor. A mentor is someone with similar interests and aims to you, only they’re a few years ahead. This can create an incredible bond and friendship and one that’s hard to find anywhere else. They will feel fulfilled and rewarded by having someone to share their hard-won knowledge with and you’ll have someone to talk to about things that no one else finds interesting!

How to Find a Mentor and Make the Most From Them

So how do you go about finding that mentor?

One option is consider the people you already know. Might a friend or even a co-worker have experience that is relevant to you? Even if you don’t know someone well, there’s nothing to stop you from striking up a friendship.

Don’t approach people and ask if they’ll be your mentor however – this is an odd behavior and one that won’t win you any friends! A mentor is an unspoken relationship, so instead just start asking for help and advice. If they’re willing, they’ll be forthcoming. Offer to buy them a coffee and they won’t feel like you’re taking advantage!

Remember as well that you can find mentors online – they don’t all have to be in person. Try emailing people you’ve done business with or who you admire and the worst that can happen is that they don’t answer!

Finally, don’t be afraid to pay for your mentor. This is essentially what a consultant does. If you are struggling with your home business and you don’t know who to ask, consider hiring a business consultant and pay for that knowledge. It’s invaluable!

You Don’t Have to Wait Until You Retire – Start Living Life Right Now!

Most of us find that we take absolutely no enjoyment from 80% of our waking lives (or thereabouts). Think about it: if you work a regular job, then that means that you’ll wake up early (7am if you’re lucky), head through crowded streets onto a crowded train and then commute for anything from 30 minutes to an hour. Sure, some people will drive to work or get the bus, but the point still stands.

Once you arrive at your destination – wearing clothes that are formal rather than comfortable or stylish – you’ll then have to sit in front of a desk, answering emails, entering data or designing spreadsheets while feeling creeping dread that you might not finish all the work you need to in time.

Many of us will stay late to make sure work is finished and we might find we get into confrontations with colleagues, team members and clients. Maybe we get reprimanded by the boss.

The worst part of all this is that we’re often not earning the money we should do for all that work and stress. The only way to earn more money is to work harder and take on more responsibility – perhaps becoming a manager otherwise being responsible for other people.

That means more stress, later nights and less time to do the things you actually want to do: like spend time with your family, work on your own projects, travel or even just chill out and watch good movies.

And it’s not even like most of us are passionate about our work! Somewhere along the line we ended up doing work we weren’t passionate about. Somehow, we forgot that the best way to do more of what we love is just to do the things we love more.

Gunning for Retirement

In our defence, there are many things that encourage this line of thinking. One example is the notion that we will at some point retire and then be able to enjoy our free time. Have you ever seen the film The Island? In that film [spoilers!], clones are grown for their body parts but are kept docile thanks to the promise of freedom at the end of their enslaved lives. Of course, there is no magical ‘island’ and captives are wasting their lives.

Sound unsettlingly familiar? That’s because many of us are doing the exact same thing: working towards a final destination and actually wasting the best years of our lives.

We even give money away to our future selves by investing large amounts into a retirement fund. This is despite the fact that we will be far less likely to be able to actually enjoy our freedom or our money at that age. We’re so afraid for our futures and so invested in them, that we forget to live now.

The other way we are kept obedient is by our own materialism. I don’t believe that there is some big conspiracy driving all of this, but the fact remains that most of us work hard to afford material possessions that we arguably do not need. We spend money on computer games, on films, on clothes, on ornaments and we become accustomed to a certain ‘style’ of living. We then need to work harder to afford those things we think we want.

Again, there is irony here. The reality is that most of us would be much happier if we just worked a little less, spent more time with our families and travelled cheaply. Most of us could be happy on a part-time salary if we remembered what to prioritize!

How Running a Home Business Can Change Everything

By the media, by governments and by pure chance, we have become brainwashed into willingly wasting most of our lives working late and feeling stressed. And it has become so ‘normal’ that most of us don’t realize that there are plenty of other options.

You don’t need to go with the flow or follow societal norms. You can start your own home business and earn just as much as you are now – or more – from the comfort of your front room… or from a sunny beach somewhere?

You don’t have to work on spreadsheets all your life: you can create something that you’re truly passionate about and proud of.

And you don’t need to commute another day in your life!

Stop waiting for retirement to be happy and realize that you have all the resources available to you to be happy and successful right now. And hurry because you won’t be young forever. We only get one go around on this Earth and it goes much faster than you could probably imagine – so make the most of it and don’t wait until you’re old and grey to start really living.
